When homeowners talk of their ideal living spaces, it’s often in a compartmentalized context. For example, the spacious kitchen, the inspiring study, or the cozy living area come to mind. While this is quite useful when designing a dream home, why not think outside the box a bit and let go of the idea of each room as a separate entity? This is the perfect opportunity to truly bring to life the concept that the sum can be greater than its parts! For this blog post, let’s consider the master bath and master bedroom. The six suggestions below can help you unify the two so that you have one extraordinary master suite!

~ Use trim to link the two rooms together. A nice look would include painting the bedroom walls a light, solid color. Then choose patterned wallpaper that includes the bedroom wall color and a darker shade of it for the bathroom. Unite the rooms with moldings and baseboards that match the bedroom wall color.

~ Connect the two rooms with common colors. For example, you may use the trim color in the bathroom as the accessories color in the bedroom (i.e. picture frames, lamp shades, or drapes).

~ Invert the color scheme. If you choose sage green walls with bone trim for the bedroom, do the reverse for the bathroom. This is an easy way to maintain continuity while choosing separately styled décor pieces for each room.

~ Use the same style for both rooms. It doesn’t have to be matchy, matchy…. just coordinated. Think antique style sink and claw tub in the bath with shabby chic bedding and distressed bedroom furniture.

~ Do be consistent in your materials palette, though. If you opt for contemporary stainless steel hardware with sleek sanitaryware in the bathroom, carry that theme over into the bedroom. Choose a sleek, modern bed frame and nightstand set with stainless steel knobs.

~ Let compatible styles be your inspiration. For example, with a Spanish style vanity in the bathroom, you might have a mosaic tile-topped chest of drawers in the bedroom. Continue that theme with a brightly colored rug and a framed Dali print.
