Preparing for Summer
With summer just around the corner, now is the time to start preparing for warmer weather. These tips can help you keep cool, stay safe, conserve energy, and save money.
1) Switch your ceiling fans to turn counter-clockwise. This pushes airflow downward and gives you a stronger draft.
2) Change the filters in your cooling system, and consider having it serviced. This will hopefully catch any forthcoming issues before it breaks and leaves you boiling in your home.
3) Reprogram your thermostat, and set it to begin cooling just before you arrive home in the evening. Additionally, close the blinds and curtains before you leave in the morning to keep your home cooler.
4) Install window stripping (or replace as needed), and hang window treatments to help keep the heat out. If possible, consider replacing older windows with dual pane, energy efficient ones.
5) Consider hanging clothes outdoors to dry. This will help keep your home cooler and save energy costs.
6) Clean your gutters of debris left behind by winter storms.
7) Eliminate any unnecessary standing water outside to help reduce mosquitoes. Clean any birdbaths and be sure to store items that can collect water (i.e. buckets, tires, etc.) upside down.
8) And probably most importantly, ensure your storm shelter is easily accessible and fully stocked.
